Coyotes Play Spoiler, Hurt Philadelphia’s Playoff Hopes

The Arizona Coyotes handed the Philadelphia Flyers a 2-1 loss Saturday night that had an impact on the Flyers’ playoff hopes, keeping them from taking sole possession of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Shane Doan and Michael Stone scored goals for the Coyotes in the first five minutes of the second period.

Both goalscorers left because of injury in the final period as the game became pugnacious. Doan’s head was pinned to the boards by a Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas elbow that left Doan dazed. Stone’s legs became tangled in a Flyers player and he was taken off the ice with assistance. Flyers captain Claude Giroux then suffered a head injury that led to multiple skirmishes. Four 10-minute misconduct penalties were called in the final 135 seconds.

The game was Doan’s 1,460th for Arizona, moving him past Dallas Stars great Mike Modano into sixth place in games played with one franchise

The Coyotes improve their record to 34-34-7 but remain 10 points out of a playoff spot with seven to play. They play at home Monday at 8 p.m. MST against the Calgary Flames.
