Coyotes Eliminated from Playoffs with 4-1 Loss to Stars

The Arizona Coyotes lost to the Dallas Stars 4-1 on the road Thursday night and are officially eliminated from playoff contention. Their record drops to 34-36-7.

Arizona took the lead at 17:07 of the first period on a goal by center Martin Hanzal which was his 13th of the season. Dallas tied it less than a minute later when right wing Patrick Eaves got a shot past Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.

Hanzal, who has three goals and two assists in three games against Dallas this season, left after the first period.

Arizona left wing Eric Selleck made his NHL debut in the game, but left due to an injury suffered in a fight with Jordie Benn in the third period. Stars coach Lindy Ruff said of the fight, “That guy that Jordie fought probably was called up to do one thing, and that’s to scrap.”

Another newcomer, defenseman Alex Grant, played his first game with Arizona and third NHL game. He also got into a fight, a second-period battle with Colton Sceviour.

Arizona coach Dave Tippett, who formerly coached the Stars, gave this assessment of the game: “We needed a lot of things to go right for us tonight. We needed our goaltender to be really outstanding and we gave up some chances, a couple he’d probably like to have.”

On Saturday, Arizona hosts the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. MST in the final home game of the season.
