Chicago Flattens Arizona in 6-2 Road Loss

The Chicago Blackhawks routed the Arizona Coyotes 6-2 Tuesday night in a game that featured Arizona center Antoine Vermette’s return to Chicago, a team he helped win a Stanley Cup last season.

The sellout crowd of 21,994 gave Vermette a warm reception during a break in the first period, then was given a reason just a period later to regret the kindness. Vermette knocked Chicago center Artem Anisimov out of the game with a rough hit into the boards that resulted in a boarding penalty and game misconduct. Anisimov appeared woozy and did not return.

With backup Louis Dominque in goal for the Coyotes, the Blackhawks unleashed an onslaught and scored the game’s first five goals. Jonathan Toews and Richard Paniks scored in the first, Patrick Kane scored in the second, and Andrew Ladd scored two goals that period to make it 5-0. The goals by Kane and Ladd all occurred on the power play.

The Coyotes got goals from defenseman Connor Murphy and center Brad Richardson in the third period. Andrew Desjardins netted the sixth goal for Chicago.

Arizona falls to 35-38-7 and plays its penultimate game of the season on the road Thursday against the Nashville Predators.

Tanguay’s Arrival in Arizona Has Boosted Vermette

The arrival of Alex Tanguay in a trade has been great for the offensive production of Antoine Vermette, observes Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic:

Vermette’s surge coincides with Tanguay’s addition to the lineup after the veteran was acquired in a trade from the Avalanche on Feb. 29. The two have combined for 17 points in their first six games together.

“We see the game in a similar way,” Tanguay said. “We like to have the puck. We like to make quick passes and from there, I think we’ve been able to find each other at a consistent level. I still think they’ll be improvement in our games as we go along here. It’s only been six games, and I think that we’ll be able to accomplish some nice things. He’s a very good player. He’s a very smart player. He plays very well both sides with and without the puck, and we kind of know where we’re at so it’s been going well.”

Vermette has seven goals since February. Tanguay will be a free agent after this season. He was traded at the deadline from the Colorado Avalanche with Kyle Wood and Connor Bleackley for Mikkel Boedker.
